The Women’s Coalition of St. Croix (WCSC) hosted its 30th annual two-mile race yesterday in Frederiksted, raising money to help victims of domestic violence. The coalition advocates for children, women and men who are victims of crime and / or survivors of domestic violence. This includes round-the-clock crisis intervention, emergency housing and counseling.
Participant experience
495 participants took part in the race, either walking, jogging or running. The race began at Fort Frederik, headed north toward Rainbow Beach; looped back into town and continued down King Street; and finally turned onto Strand Street headed back to the fort.
Participants got a beautiful ocean view along the waterfront to complete the race. They were greeted with chilled water and fresh fruit at the finish line donated by The Bistro.
A chip tracking system was used to provide participants exact time and pace information. Runners wore ankle bracelets for the system and results are posted here, compliments of the Virgin Islands Pace Runners.
Winners
The overall winner was Juan Robles with a time of 8:27, becoming the first male to win the annual race. He is a competitive long-distance runner and half-marathon champion. The top female finisher was Ninfa Barnard clocking in at 9:12. Awards were also given to the best times within age groups.
Registration open to all
For the first time men were invited to participate in the race. In past years, they have supported from the sidelines. Participants ranged in age from less than one year to 80. Many families completed the race together and pushed little ones in strollers.
Event Dedication
This year’s race was in honor of Mary Mingus, a recent retiree after 30 years with the Women’s Coalition. Each participant wore a number which also said “Run for Mary.” Mingus was also a member of the V.I. Pace Runners.
Event Coordination
Clema Lewis planned this event and coordinated all events for the coalition. She also serves as the executive director.
