Caribbean Cinemas is investing $10 million in a new state-of-the-art movie theater which will include an IMAX screen on St. Croix, set to open by Christmas 2016. The project will be a standalone theater located in the Sunny Isle area, next door to the Water and Power Authority (WAPA) office and across the street from the existing theater in Sunny Isle Shopping Center. The owner of the existing Caribbean Cinemas location on St. Croix (who also owns Sunny Isle Shopping Center) is funding the project.
According to a representative from Breunlin Construction (the general contractor for the Caribbean Cinemas project), here are details about the new theater:
Square footage: 30,000
Number of screens: Eight
Structural features: Two private party rooms (available for event rental)
Technical features: state-of-the-art sound system / digital projectors
Design feature: Stadium seating (equivalent to stateside theaters)
Food offerings: A high quality cafe in the lobby will offer a varied menu
Beverage offerings: Bar in the lobby will serve beer and wine
General contractor: Breunlin Construction (St. Thomas based)
Project cost: $10 million
Estimated completion date: December 2016
According to the representative from Breunlin Construction, Caribbean Cinemas “believes in investing in St. Croix.” They hope to “stimulate the island’s economy with this new theater, by providing opportunities for employment.”
