Last night Freedom City Surf Shop on St. Croix’s west end, hosted a full moon paddle board and beach party. A group of nearly 40 people paddle-boarded out from Teres Veho Beach toward the Frederiksted cruise ship pier to sit under the moon on the ocean. Close to 100 people gathered under the full moon afterward to enjoy a bonfire, music, food and drinks. As with so many great island events, the crowd was diverse and included many ages, ethnicities and walks of life.
Food
Chef Jamey Hughson and Chef Cece Reyes of Bon Bagay Sailing were grilling on the beach featuring tacos and sliders.
Music
Live music went well into the night with The Medhani Alem Band featuring Junyah P.
Entertainment
A beach bonfire was open to all with a performance by Kiki and the Flaming Gypsies (fire dancers).
Stand-Up Paddle Board (SUP)
Paddle board rentals and instruction were provided by Freedom City Surf Shop. The shop offers annual memberships, lessons and even paddle board / yoga classes.
Stand-up paddle boarding has gained tremendous popularity on St. Croix in recent years. Particularly the island’s west end and north shore often have ideal, calm conditions. Paddle boards are also commonly seen at Buck Island northeast of St. Croix, or Shell Island off the south shore.
A group of stand-up paddle board enthusiasts have emerged on-island, which meet to paddle together at various locations on-island. There are also teams that travel to nearby islands for competitions, such as the Painkiller Cup between Beef Island and Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands. SUP St. John keeps a calendar of USVI and nearby paddle board competitions.
