Establishing a Post Office Box on St. Croix

Post offices seem to be fazing themselves out on the U.S. mainland… encouraging online package pick-up scheduling, ordering stamps for home delivery, et cetera.  But in the U.S. Virgin Islands, post offices remain a social center in the community.  Mail delivery directly to homes and businesses on St. Croix is a rare treat, reserved for select areas in and around the main towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted.  For the remainder of island offices and residences, post office boxes must be established and checked regularly.  Here are the few steps required to establish the ability to receive mail on-island:

1. Find the post office most convenient to your home or business:

  • Gallows Bay (best for those living on the east end with ample parking)
  • Christiansted Downtown on Company Street (perfect for those working in town)
  • Richmond (just west of Christiansted and Basson Triangle, primary post office for the island)
  • Sunny Isle Shopping Center (mid-island east connected to Kmart)
  • Kingshill (mid-island in La Reine)
  • Frederiksted (on the southeast side of town, ideal for those working there)

2. Apply for a post office box

3. Bring form and required identification to the post office you selected

Identification Options (two required / one must have a photo / both must be current):

  • Driver’s license
  • State/territory non-driver’s identification card
  • Armed forces, university, government, or recognized corporate identification card
  • Passport, passport card, certificate of naturalization, or alien registration card
  • Current lease, deed of trust, or mortgage
  • Vehicle or voter registration
  • Vehicle or home insurance policy

Ready to subscribe to the coconut telegraph?  While mail to/from the U.S. Virgin Islands is delayed, we (thankfully) fall under the U.S. Postal Service and enjoy the same domestic postage rates.  So when you’re ready to make St. Croix your full or part-time home, rest assured sending and receiving mail is no big deal.  For expert guidance on buying a home, condo, land or commercial space on-island, contact Chris and Kerri Hanley.  Download their free St. Croix Event Guide to find the perfect time for an extended visit:
