Eating Healthy and Local: Farmers’ Markets on St. Croix

This weekend is the Virgin Islands Agriculture and Food Fair in St. Croix, known on island as Agrifest or simply Ag Fair. It’s one of St. Croix’s most enduring and exciting annual events, and a can’t-miss celebration of local culture, food, and, yes, agriculture.
While it’s a thrill to try the various tropical produce from our island and beyond during the three-day event, eating healthy, locally grown vegetables and fruits doesn’t have to be a once-a-year experience. St. Croix is home to a number of farms and markets where you can purchase fresh seasonal goods weekly — or even daily.
(As always, call ahead or check social media to ensure operating hours are accurate, especially if you try to check any of these out during Ag Fair weekend, as many of the farms will be exhibiting at the fair!)
Saturday Farmer’s Market on the Agricultural Grounds
Saturdays from 5AM
At the very same venue as Ag Fair is the weekly Saturday Farmers’ Market, where you’ll find a weekly selection of booths set up by local growers, selling produce, plants, honey, and other locally made wares. Just don’t expect island time here: The early bird gets the best selection, and vendors tend to pack up as they sell out.
Sejah Farm
Mon thru Fri, 10AM to 5PM
Why wait until the weekend to stock up? Sejah Farm, located in Castle Burke on the way to the Rain Forest, is open weekdays and features all manner of seasonal produce and seedlings, plus locally raised eggs, goat, and lamb.
Annaly Farms
Tuesday to Friday, 8AM to 5:30PM & Saturdays, 8AM-3PM
The birthplace of St. Croix’s own breed of cattle, Annaly Farms has been selling beef from Senapol cows for over 50 years. Visit its butcher shop in Upper Love out Midland Road for cut-to-order and frozen steaks, roasts, ribs, and more, plus selections of goat, lamb, and even fish!
River Love Farm
Place order by Tuesday for Wednesday pickup
Located in the same general area as Sejah and Annaly is River Love, a small-but-mighty operation offering organically grown vegetables such as peppers and tomatoes, herbs like mint, lemonbalm, and basil, and greens. Selection varies and is posted on the farm’s website, where you may place your order for pickup on Wednesdays at either mid-island or west locations.
Ridge to Reef Farm Share CSA & Farm Store
CSA pickup on Saturday; Store open Wednesdays & Saturdays, 11AM-3PM
Established over 15 years ago, Ridge to Reef offers seasonal farm shares of its certified organic produce that are fully customizable in size (full share or half share), frequency (weekly or every other week), and contents. Sign up with the season and indicate your general preferences and pickup location, then log into your account each week to select the items you want, don’t want, or want more of (at an additional cost). You can get more than fruits and veggies here, too — local eggs, cheese, bread, and salsas and sauces are on regular rotation. If you’re not quite ready for the commitment of a farm share, you can visit Ridge to Reef’s farm store on Mahogany Road in Little La Grange on Wednesday and Saturdays.
Art Farm
Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings
On St. Croix’s South Shore you’ll find Art Farm, a family-run operation founded in 2009. Though its specialties are salad greens, herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and cucumbers, you’ll find fruits like watermelon, pomegranates, and longans, as well as cuttings to grow your own produce, and even eggs, cheese, and meat on occasion. Farmstand hours are limited and popular, so expect a line when you arrive, even if you’re early.
Southgate Corner Farmers’ Market
Saturdays, 9AM to 2PM
The Southgate Corner Farmer’s Market sets up weekly on the East End in the southwest lot just before the turn toward Cheeseburgers. It features produce vendors, plant sellers, bakers, candymakers, cheesemongers, and even local artists selling their handcrafted wares. Arrive early for the best selection and hang around for some great conversations with vendors and attendees alike.
East End Farmers’ and Artisan’s Market at The Hangar
Sundays, 9AM to 2PM
The newest offering and the farthest east, the East End Farmers’ and Artisan’s Market sets up at The Hanger, just behind The Sausage Shack and in front of Seven Flags Storage. Shop for all manner of local offerings from produce to crafts and more, and make it a Sunday Funday with brunch from The Shack!
