Earlier this month, St. Croix kids got a thrill when 10 Ghost Players based on the team in the movie Field of Dreams offered a free baseball clinic locally (two of the players acted in the original movie). The youth baseball clinic took place on March 1 at D.C. Canegata Ballpark, just east of Christiansted. More than 60 boys and girls ranging from 5 to 10 years old from St. Croix participated. They learned basic pitching, batting and fielding skills. At the end, each child received a baseball, autographs and photos with the players.
The Ghost Players are a baseball team and comedy troupe that look to teach basic baseball skills to kids. According to Team General Manager, Kevin Rahe, the team’s underlying mission is to spread a positive message to youth and their communities. They hope that focus on a sport or activity like baseball can “propel you to success for your entire life,” said Rahe. Prior to St. Croix, The Ghost Players were visiting Puerto Rico.
The 1989 film Field of Dreams starred Kevin Costner and featured a ghost team based on the Chicago White Sox. The movie was filmed in a rural farm area of Iowa.
