Ready to get rolling on your life in the left lane? When you move to St. Croix, one of the first things you will need is your own set of wheels.
While a bus system exists (VITran) and taxis abound catering to tourists, by far the easiest way to get around is by car. Several options exist to either ship your existing vehicle or purchase one on-arrival:
Vehicle Shipping
Shipment of your stateside vehicle is available from the port in Miami to St. Croix through several shippers, including VI Cargo and Fleming’s Transport. The process takes between 11 and 15 days, depending on your drop-off / delivery date and customs processing time. A stop is made in San Juan, Puerto Rico prior to its arrival on St. Croix. If you don’t want to drive to Miami, ground transfer options are available from major cities.
Your vehicle shipping cost will be calculated by its weight. If the vehicle is foreign, you may be subject to import tax.
When you ship your vehicle, be sure it does not contain any personal belongings. There is an unfortunate history of theft during this process, as the car must remain unlocked during the shipping process to be driven on and off the boat.
Used Vehicles For Sale
If you prefer to buy a used vehicle on-arrival, there are usually plenty of options. Check online classifieds on VI Moving Center, Craig’s List and St. Croix Source. Print classified ads also run in the local print newspapers, St. Croix Avis and VI Daily News. If you find a vehicle on nearby St. Thomas or Puerto Rico, shipping is fairly easy and inexpensive.
Facebook is also a great resource for used car postings. A closed group exists called St Croix Vi Buy Or Sell Your Stuff 24/7, which you can ask to join. With more than 1,600 members, it is a great place to find a vehicle quickly.
Straker Motors is a pre-owned vehicle dealership on-island. Rental car companies sometimes hold fleet sales as well, such as Centerline Car Rental and Judi of St. Croix.
New Vehicles For Sale
A handful of new car dealerships are available on-island including Metro Motors (Ford) and Caribbean Auto Group (Toyota, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep). Expect to see a mark-up from identical vehicles in the states due to shipping costs.
