Limetree Bay Terminals, LLC (Limetree) in conjunction with the office of U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp will host a block party open to the public tomorrow (Sunday, September 11) from 4 to 9 p.m. in Frederiksted. Limetree is the company which acquired the former HOVENSA (Hess) oil refinery on St. Croix’s south shore in January (read more about the acquisition). The party is officially centered at Verne I. Richards Veteran Memorial Park on the waterfront of Freedom City.
The most anticipated portion of this event will be the firework show, put on by Grucci. This New York-based company currently holds the Guinness World Record for largest firework display. The island grapevine rumors the cost of this firework display to be more than $100,000.
Live music performances will include Xpress Band; Eddie Russell; along with Latin, reggae, calypso and jazz bands. Both the Rising Star and St. Patrick’s steel pan orchestras will perform.
Featured entertainers will be the St. Croix Majorettes; traditional quadrille dancers; as well as dance troupes from several local schools (St. Mary’s, Alfredo Andrews and Ricardo Richards).
Event organizers promise free food samplings and soft drinks. Also offered are giveaways for students 16 years and under, plus face painting available to children 12 years and under.
As of April of this year, almost 450 were employed full-time by ArcLight (partner company of Limetree). Nearly 80 percent of those employees are U.S. Virgin Islands residents.
