Man’s Best Friend Finds Paradise on St. Croix

People aren’t the only ones loving life on St. Croix, pets of island residents are living it up too.  Obviously the tropical weather year-round makes a positive difference for most dogs and cats, as they can always play outside.  Dog owners are often seen hiking trails, walking the bypass or island neighborhoods.  Many beaches are dog-friendly, so it is common to see pups swimming in the ocean, digging in the sand or playing fetch.  A  few locations on-island make it particularly easy to be a good pet owner on St. Croix.

Veterinarians

Many outstanding veterinarians call St. Croix home.  Their offices include Island Animal Clinic, Progressive Veterinary Center and Sugar Mill Veterinary Center.  The later was founded in 2008 and is an impressive, high-tech facility on St. Croix’s north shore in the Princess area.  As its name implies, it is built around a historical sugar mill, which was converted to boarding space.  The facility is run by solar and wind power, as part of its eco-friendly mission.  Animals enjoy plenty of play space with multiple fenced dog runs.

For those who prefer to have a vet come to them or for emergencies which warrant this mobility, Dr. Laura Bailey, DVM, is available.  She has converted a barn on the property of her east end home into a surgical suite.  Dr. Bailey’s business is called East End Mobile Veterinarian (stxvet@gmail.com).

Animal Welfare Center

When you’re ready to adopt the newest member of your island family, The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center is ready to help.  This is an incredible organization run by passionate volunteers.  They combat St. Croix’s animal overpopulation with programs like Pets from Paradise, which asks volunteers to fly with adopted dogs and cats to their new stateside homes.

The Animal Welfare Center is instrumental in helping lost island pets return to their owners.  Microchips and licenses are offered to aid in this identification and reuniting process.  They have also developed a great network to communicate quickly regarding lost animals.

Pet Boutique

If you think island life means giving up fancy doggy and kitty boutiques you find in the states, you are mistaken.  A beautiful pet boutique called The Blue Mutt is located in Christiansted.  A fundraising extension of the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, the store sells pet treats, toys, clothes and accessories.  They also carry clothing and gently used books for pet lovers.  To further support the welfare center, The Blue Mutt offers art classes and sells pieces by local artists.

Ready to move your whole family to paradise, including the furry members?
