An interview with On the Walls Proprietor Christine Hendley-Goodrich:
Why did you decide to open a frame shop?
Art has always been a big part of my life and I recently rediscovered my love of painting. I began showing my work and before I knew it, people were buying my pieces and commissioning me to do works for them. As I sold my paintings, people always asked “where can I get this framed?” After the fourth or fifth person asked, I thought to myself . . . why am I not doing the framing? After all, many years ago my parents owned a frame shop on-island; I was an art major in college; I have worked in frame shops in the states; I have been to trade school; and I have the knowledge and experience… so from there, On The Walls was born!
How did you choose the location?
I have always loved Gallows Bay for its convenience and abundant parking. But I honestly think the location and the space chose me! The space had been vacant for a while. However, the moment I walked in the door, I had a vision of what it would look like and how it would flow.
Are you selling framed artwork as well?
I am working on ideas for using the wall space to showcase local art including some of my own. My goal is to have monthly art shows so I can show people different framing and matting techniques I offer, while also supporting the local art community.
I’m also in-touch with a few schools about potentially doing student art shows. I can remember being young and how exciting it was to have my art on display, so I’d love to help budding artists experience the same excitement. I don’t have much framed work in stock yet, but once the shows start taking place, that will change.
Are you the only one on-island offering particular services / framing options?
