On The Walls Custom Framing Newest Addition to Gallows Bay

imageAn interview with On the Walls Proprietor Christine Hendley-Goodrich:

Why did you decide to open a frame shop?

Art has always been a big part of my life and I recently rediscovered my love of painting. I began showing my work and before I knew it, people were buying my pieces and commissioning me to do works for them. As I sold my paintings, people always asked “where can I get this framed?” After the fourth or fifth person asked, I thought to myself . . . why am I not doing the framing? After all, many years ago my parents owned a frame shop on-island; I was an art major in college; I have worked in frame shops in the states; I have been to trade school; and I have the knowledge and experience… so from there, On The Walls was born!

How did you choose the location?

I have always loved Gallows Bay for its convenience and abundant parking. But I honestly think the location and the space chose me! The space had been vacant for a while. However, the moment I walked in the door, I had a vision of what it would look like and how it would flow.

Are you selling framed artwork as well?

I am working on ideas for using the wall space to showcase local art including some of my own. My goal is to have monthly art shows so I can show people different framing and matting techniques I offer, while also supporting the local art community.

I’m also in-touch with a few schools about potentially doing student art shows. I can remember being young and how exciting it was to have my art on display, so I’d love to help budding artists experience the same excitement. I don’t have much framed work in stock yet, but once the shows start taking place, that will change.

Are you the only one on-island offering particular services / framing options?

I offer quite a few services that no one else does, simply because my talented and handy husband is happy to help on any large projects that I may be working on! First, we do all of the cutting and assembly of frames in-house. The matte cutter I have can cut all sorts of fun shapes for openings and even words! There is a pen attachment so I can do fancy scroll work, french matting and embossing.
I offer in home/office consultations on everything from where / how to hang your art, to advice on large pieces you may not want to travel with because of size or value. Once a decision is made, we offer a pick-up/drop off service for large or multiple items. We offer installation options for those pesky pictures that never seem to hang straight.  For offices/hotels/restaurants we have security options that not only protect art investments, but also keep customers safe when there are large pieces of glass on things.

Also, I have recently enrolled in a course and I am working to become a certified fine art appraiser. Since opening the shop I have been privileged to work on so many beautiful works of art, some quite historic. I am excited to more readily identify works that may be more valuable than originally thought. Then to frame those works of art to not only respect and preserve them, but to enhance their beauty.
