For the first time in more than a decade, St. Croix is hosting the Little League Baseball Caribbean Regional Tournament at Canegata Ballpark. It began July 16 and concludes tomorrow, July 23. Participating players are 11 to 12 years old. The official host is the Elmo Plaskett Little League organization.
Playing today are Curacao versus Aruba at 4 p.m. and the Dominican Republic versus Saint Thomas at 7 p.m. The winner of those respective games will play in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m. The champion will go on to the Little League Championship in August, which broadcasts live on ESPN.
Local crowds have been overwhelmingly supportive of the event, with large groups of spectators showing up to support all the teams, not just the USVI players. Traffic in the evenings around Canegata Ball park has been busy, with parking maxed and street vendors out to provide food and beverages for the crowds.
In addition, the We Deh Yah Cultural Dancers have been out to show the traveling spectators a bit of St. Croix heritage. Several politicians have also come to speak at the games and show their support, including Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter and Legislator Kurt Vialet.
Participating teams:
- Aruba
- Bonaire
- Curacao
- Dominican Republic
- Puerto Rico
- Saint Croix
- Saint Thomas
